MANCHESTER

The Neighborhood of Manchester is located on Pittsburgh"s North Side, and was originally part of the city of Allegheny. The neighborhood took it's name from the English industrial city, which supplied some of it's early settlers. Most of what is currently Manchester was built in the last quarter of the 19th Century as an upper middle class neighborhood. Most of the original housing stock consists of; Rowhouses, in fairly short rows of 4-12 houses. Double houses. Mansions. Detached houses. Most are constructed of brick. The majority of houses are porchless, and front on the sidewalk, although there are a number of porch front rowhomes. In the true Pittsburgh style, there is no pattern to the layout, and you can find every manner of home within a few blocks, including some 1970s suburban style intrusions. Some of the finest 19th century homes to be found in Pittsburgh are in Manchester. The predominant architechtural style in the neighborhood is Italianate.
